It was a little over a year ago [1995] that I stumbled on the Zone Books version of La Jetee; I decided then and there to track down Marker. I had long fantasized making an interactive CD-ROM version of La Jetee. If Marker had given permission for a book version, might he not also be open to an interactive version? When I called Marker's publisher Meighan Gale at Zone Books, she reminded me that Marker is a shy, reclusive man. But I convinced her to pass on my request for a meeting. His faxed reply a short while later spoke of a chaotic schedule, and I got my first hint that he was not a typical 75-year-old. He was working on an exhibition and a music video (for Laurie Anderson, I later learned).. He'd try to meet with me, but he wasn't even sure he would be in Paris the week I was visiting.
