It took a huge crane to dig the hole in our front yard (shown above)
My father built the escape hatch / air vent, and most of the bomb shelter, himself (shown above right)
The shelter itself was a reassembled Southern Pacific box car that was lowered by crane into a thirty foot deep hole (shown to the right)
